TheStory
The truth behind Sera’s reason for marrying Nyktos has been revealed and Nyktos’ trust in her is shattered. But they are forced to put aside their personal problems and defeat the false king, Kolis, and the plague he is inflicting in the mortal realm. Sera’s true identity is revealed, pushing her towards the Culling and she will need Nyktos now more than ever, but there is no love lost between them - literally.
While Sera comes closer to her Culling, danger lurks around every corner. Without Nyktos’ love, which he is literally incapable of, Sera will not survive the process. Now, there may not be love but there is passion and undeniable chemistry.
TheReview
This second installment picks up right where A Shadow in the Ember left off. Literally with the same sentence. I LOVE THAT! I love that we don’t miss a single moment. We get to continue right into the storyline without missing a beat.
Obviously, the tension is off the charts with Nyktos and Sera. His poor little sad boy energy is only intensified with the revelation of Sera’s betrayal. BETRAYAL, I TELL YOU! Clearly we all saw it coming but it was so sad to watch Nyktos find out.
As the book progresses, the relationship becomes more layered and complicated. Who would’ve seen that coming? Me. I saw that coming. There is still a lot of physical intimacy but the actual emotions and communication is a slooooow burn. Love it. Hate it. But mostly love it. It’s literally why I’m here.
This book is absolutely more focused on the relationship building (after being utterly decimated last book) and character dynamics because the storyline was more or less fully established in the last book. So we get a lot more tension-y, drama-filled, heart-string-tugging scenes in this one than the last one. That being said though, there is still a decent amount of action.
Warning: The ending is a total cliff hanger, so be prepared for an uncontrollable desire to buy the next book in the series.
