Kingdom of the Wicked #3

TheStory

Everything is… not as it seems. While Emilia has been able to glean answers to some of her important questions, it has only led to more confusion. Who is actually evil? What is the true curse? Who can she trust? It’s up to Emilia to figure it out.

TheReview

GAH! Wha… Ho… Wow.

All of the sudden, we are getting answers left and right, people! But also… it’s just causing more questions to unfold.

Quite frankly, I was over all the convoluted insanity by the time I hit the halfway point of this book. Two and a half books of insanity?! A bit too much for my tastes, given that answers were not remotely sprinkled throughout the series. But alas, it was still good and everything does get thoroughly answered by the end (thank the goddess).

That dang curse. Literally ruining everything. And I could not figure out the full extent of it for the life of me. It was such a woven bundle of threads to untangle.

New players come out in this one, as well, that help to sort out the web of lies and deceit… eventually.

Something I found very interesting is the point the author made about good and evil in this book. Technically, there isn’t a “good” or an “evil.” No one is just wholly one thing. Everyone is a little bit of both. It’s just a matter of what their goals are and how they go about achieving them.

Frankly, I felt just like Emilia did in this book. In fact, I don’t think she was frustrated enough. Each time I thought I knew  where to start detangling the mess, a new thread knotted itself into the mix.

That was the gist of the entire book for me. Complicated. Insane. Lies (purposeful or otherwise).

All that to be said, all the questions do wind up answered. It’s just a lot of information and detangling. There were twists and turns that I did not see coming, but in the end made everything make total sense.

I loved it. It definitely read more like a fantasy or mystery novel than a romance or romantasy.

Worth it.

P.S. Throughout this whole series, the side characters really were not used to their full potential, except for the brothers. They were amazing.
