Ruthless Vows
Letters of Enchantment #2
By Rebecca Ross
TheStory
After being sent to the front line of the war, Roman and Iris now play a vital role in it. Due to Roman’s capture by Dacre, he is separated from Iris. When Dacre erases Roman’s memory, he is forced to fight on the opposite side of the war from Iris. Although initially unaware of his past, Roman eventually strikes up correspondence once again with Iris via their magically connected typewriters.
As the two fight on opposing sides of the war, their writing continues to shape public opinion, which everyone knows can change the tide of a war. As the war progresses, Roman and Iris work to end Dacre and save Oath. When they risk their lives to end the war, only fate will decide who comes out victorious in the end.
TheReview
Similar to Divine Rivals, there is still little romance in this book, given that the MCs are separated and the war is ultimately coming to a head. That being said, I still stand by being utterly obsessed with these two. Their relationship continuing along, even in the face of war, is beautiful.
This book was such a change in pace from standard fantasy romance, and even contemporary romance. The MCs, while in love, actually both believe in the greater good. They are not content to watch the world burn down in order to be with each other. Both of them understand the greater good at stake.
Much of the book is highly suspenseful. At one point, I stopped reading for three days because I just had to process what I read. That’s a good book, if you ask me. Which you did. Or you wouldn’t be here reading.
The ending was so satisfying. Everything was wrapped up in a neat little bow and it was magical. I find it’s sometimes difficult for a writer (or publisher) to know the length requirement of a series (not all series need SIX BOOKS). This series knew exactly the length it should be - just a simple duet. It was exactly the right amount of length, love, suspense, and action (if you know that it’s not as much “romance” as it is “ficiton”). Personally, I would market this as fiction, maybe fantasy, but not necessarily romance. Which is exactly why I loved it.
