There Is No Devil

Sinners Duet #2

By Sophie Lark

TheStory

Picking up right where There Are No Saints left off, Shaw remains a threat and Mara now lives with Cole for her own protection. He won’t leave her alone for a moment until they deal with Shaw. However, the two of them have different ideas on how to handle them.

As Shaw taunts them, Mara wishes to take care of him by way of following the law but Cole has his own plans. Mara’s pesky morals just keep getting in his way. Now, he must drag her into his darkness in order to proceed with his plans for Shaw.

TheReview

Although it seems like a thriller (which it is… a bit), it really reads like a love story. The gist is Cole and Mara’s relationship, with an emphasis on Mara finding who she is in the darkness alongside Cole. Even though Cole is dragging her with him, she does provide him with a little spark of light.

Shaw is the main antagonist in the story, along with the law… obviously. And the detective? What a moron. He serves as a “secondary antagonist” if you will.

The final confrontation of the book is NAIL BITING. I practically skimmed it because I was on the edge of my seat and dying to know what would happen. I did go back and read the bits that I skimmed so that I got all the info, but my goodness, it was so hard to go slowly through that part.

I loved this duet. Both books were really good in all aspects - writing, characters, storyline, etc. Personally I think they were slightly overhyped but they are still so worth reading. They aren’t as dark or disturbing as people made them sound but he is still a serial killer and she is still dragged into his dark world.

FavoriteQuotes

“I’ve never met a real hero, I don’t think they exist. Only a monster can protect me.” - Mara

“If there’s no objective measure, then all that matters is how I feel. Cole is a shade of gray I can accept… If Cole is wrong, then so am I. - Mara

“Whatever else I may be, I was never a man who had to tear a woman down to shine bright beside her. If you’re not as good as me, then you’re no good at all. And when I saw you, Mara… I thought, this girl is really fucking good. I don’t want to hold you down, chop you down, diminish you in any way. I already know I found something special. Now it’s time for everyone else to see it.” - Cole
