Emory is drugged and sent to Blackchurch - a remote location where wealthy families wend their problem children. But Emory’s family isn’t wealthy and she isn’t a problem child. So her presence at Blackchurch is a mystery. While there, she finds out Will has also been sentenced to Blackchurch and even his presence is a mystery. 

After Will and Emory’s falling out in high school, Will absolutely hated Emory and wants nothing to do with her. But being trapped together, surrounded by enemies, will either bring them together or force them apart.

It is wild to me how hateful Will became in this book from his happy-go-lucky self because of his circumstances. Emory really wrecked him and I totally understand why Will hated her so much. 

The past timeline in this one is so great to read. It’s fun watching Will chase Emory. Which also made it gut wrenching how Emory treats Will because of her home life and her own bitterness. She treats him so awful. Poor Will!

The present timeline is a little confusing. Mostly, I didn’t understand anyone’s motives or why Blackchurch was run the way it was. Maybe it’s supposed to be a “mystery” unraveling? But it’s more weird and confusing than anything else. Almost like there was no setting in which Will and Emory would be forced together, so one was invented out of thin air without any rhyme or reason. 

Really, the book just wasn’t great. There were mysteries all over the place, with no reasoning as to why the mysteries existed, and no answers were provided until the very end. AND Will and Emory’s final relationship decision was also at the very end, so they aren’t even together for almost the entire thing. There wasn’t a big moment or shift or anything… It just sort of happened and that was it. So, not a huge fan of this book overall. It just seemed disjointed.
