Devil’s Night #3

By Penelope Douglas

*Can be read as a standalone*

TheStory

When Winter was 16 years old, she accused Damon of raping her and Damon was sent to prison. On Damon’s side, he doesn’t see it that way. But Winter is adamant about her viewpoint as well.

While the events that transpired are more complicated than they may seem at first sight, Damon is on a warpath for revenge.

TheReview

Okay okay okay okay okay…

Damon over here giving me whiplash!

Truly, I was scared to read this book because Damon seems like an actual psychopath… and not the fun kind. Which he is. But also, isn’t. Call me a psychopath myself, but over the course of the book, I actually fell in love with him. Hard. Don’t get me wrong, he is a bad dude. But still, it’s fiction so cut him (and me) some slack.

With that being said, let’s talk about what happened between him and Winter when she was 16. Okay, I’m not saying that what he did was acceptable. But I also don’t know if I would label him a “rapist.” I know it’s a hot take, but I would never be able to like a character that I honestly believe did that will malintent or was actually a sexual predator.

On the other hand, I also completely understand why they hate each other. They both ruined each others’ lives back in the day. Damon for being a dirty, lying bastard and Winter for what she did while handling her emotions.

I only have two minor complaints.

The timelines are getting confusing between all the books. Because one had a separation of two years, one had like six years, and one had like 7 years. I guess it doesn’t really matter if the past timelines overlap, but I personally would like to know what happened first. But the story is still fantastic, so that’s why it's just a minor complaint. And the seven years ago timeline is the best. Seeing Winter and Damon’s relationship develop was beautiful and even more gut wrenching.

Second minor complaint - it seemed like Damon’s sudden change of character was totally out of the blue. He wasn’t really in the process of development throughout the whole book. He just all of the sudden broke down and spilled his sad little guts everywhere.

I have not been a fan of this series until THIS BOOK! Oh my good gracious. This book is so beautiful, heart wrenching, stomach dropping… you name it, I felt it. If for no other reason, read the series for this book. Honestly, you could probably get by reading this one as a standalone but the side stuff would be weird if you didn’t read the other ones.

*Small Spoiler*

There is a VERY descriptive child rape scene. I had to skim it because I could not stand to read it. It is fully detailed and several pages long.
