TheReview
This is a tough book to review without spoilers and you do not want ANY spoilers or it will ruin the whole story and the mystery that goes along with it.
I was genuinely confused in the beginning. No one seemed to find the odd happenings strange in the least! That included Darcy, who should be the number one person to be freaked out since she didn’t grow up in the town. She wound up finding it a little strange eventually, but I would have been losing my mind, personally.
I spent a solid chunk of the book trying to figure out what was going on. It was definitely confusing, but in the way it should be. You’re supposed to be figuring out the mystery alongside Darcy.
Let’s talk Amon and Caleb…
Amon is like life and peace. Caleb is thrilling and fear-inducing. Personally, I couldn’t figure out what was going on with these two. Normally I’m a pretty good guesser, but there was something about these guys that I could not figure out. Which again, was part of the bigger mystery.
One thing that really threw me off was the writing. I like old-timey, 1950s dialogue. I also like modern language. I like them both as much as the next girl. But what is with the constant switch from the 1950s lingo to modern vulgar language. That just really took me out of the story sometimes.
There was not a point in the entire book until the very end that I felt like I knew whom I could trust. I’m all for the suspense but I really didn’t get hardly any answers until the monologues came out right at the end. But since we didn’t have so many answers until so late in the novel, I was able to craft so many theories (about half of which were right).
Recommend focusing on the story as a whole and keep the nuggets of information stored away, but don’t focus too much on any one aspect or mystery. Just enjoy the ride.
I’m utterly obsessed with these characters. I like the 1700s vibe almost more than the 1900s storyline because it was just so sweet and heart warming. It tended to make more sense to me. About 3/4 of the way through, there is a wholly different setting at play, which starts to connect everything.
Even though most of the answers don’t come until the end, the mysteries began to unravel around the half way point. The storylines came together slightly convoluted but in the best way. So beautiful.
Phewf! Well, I’m pretty proud of that review without any spoilers. That was not an easy task so I hope it helped someone find their next read.
