Haunting Adeline

Cat & Mouse #1

By H.D. Carlton

TheStory

Adeline, an author with social anxiety and a fear kink, catches the eye of Zade, a morally dark man who also works against human trafficking.

Once in his sights, Zade refuses to let her go, even if that means pushing her way past her own limits and morality.

But Zade is not the only person with Addie in his sights. Nor the only one unwilling to let her go.

TheReview

First and foremost, Zade absolutely r*pes Adeline. In two ways but not with his peen. Still r*pe. I was not expecting that with how much everyone fawns over the dude. He says he never wants to hurt her but full on makes her cry and physically puts her in pain (not the sexy kind) to get his way with her. I am NOT a vanilla reader but that was a big no from me.

Also, he can’t be “morally grey” just because he’s against women being human trafficked. He’s a R*PIST! His only moral compass is human trafficking… apparently that’s too far? But not assaulting a woman? No.

But besides that…

Let’s list everything else about the book…

It’s very stalker-y. Basically the whole first half is Zade stalking Adeline and scaring the ever-love bajesus out of her all the time. Loved that.

THE SUSPENSE! The whole book was so suspenseful. I had no idea what was going to come around every new chapter.

Okay, Adeline is stupid. Really stupid. But like, she knows she stupid. So, is she really stupid if she knows she’s stupid? Plus, she has to fall for the r*pey, stalker man… so I guess that she has to be a little stupid.

Both of the MCs are freaking hilarious. Especially Zade. I laughed out loud throughout the whole book and it made me smile.

After the assault, there are really romantic parts that made me swoon so hard.

I actually liked the plot even though it was simple. It kept me totally hooked.

Lastly, the ending was so good! I knew what was going to happen in the end but the writing of it still had me on the edge of my couch. And during the last part, Adeline actually consents, so that’s nice.

The ONLY problems I have with this book are the assault which the author and NONE of my friends mentioned and the fact that he really has no morals, he’s just “justified” by his anti-human-trafficking agenda. I love a morally grey man, and a stalker, and pain with pleasure, even non-con - but the assault was a big no from me.

The storyline had me totally hooked and I loved Adeline. Would have loved Zade if not for his big red flag. on fire. with sparks shooting out of it.
