Two years after the end of Red Rising, Darrow has graduated the Institute and has now also completed the Academy. After suffering a major and humiliating defeat in the Academy, he now is dealing with rivals and his own past trauma. However, he has also secured a position as the right hand of the ArchGovernor of Mars. Navigating the political landscape he is smack in the center of, the crux of Darrow’s (and the rebellion’s) is still that Darrow’s identity as a Red remains a secret.

Darrow continues his plans to dismantle the Gold society from within while also dealing with betrayals from his allies and the loss of his friends. At the Society’s Summit, Darrow sparks a civil war among the Gold families. While intended to weaken the Society, it also puts Darrow at risk. With chaos erupting all around, the rebellion must make their move, while still keeping Darrow’s identity hidden and dealing with their catastrophic losses.

What an absolutely shyte show from start to finish. Everything is just completely bananas. The very beginning is a bit slow but immediately turns to action-packed, non-stop thrills. Battles. Deceit. Betrayals. All. Over. The. Place.

This one was SO MUCH better than Red Rising. Which I said. Remember my last review? I SAID that Red Rising wasn’t great but was a good setup for the rest of the series. If you are debating reading the series, just get through Red Rising and this one will be so worth it. Everything comes together into an actually interesting plot.

There is a tiny little love story as a side story. It’s sort of a love triangle for a hot minute but it’s quickly squashed. It’s not remotely part of the main storyline but I liked a little heart thrown in on the side.

Better than Red Rising, the whole book is so well written. Pierce Brown doesn’t tell the reader every plan and everything going on so we get to be pleasantly surprised when those plans and things are revealed. Sometimes you don’t even know what the plan was until it’s already in place or happening.

The ending is so WILD! It ends on thee most intense cliffhanger. I need the next book immediately. Get ready for a wild ride.
