Morning Star

Red Rising Saga #3

By Pierce Brown

TheStory

After escaping captivity by one of his enemies, Darrow must now reunite the divided resistance that have fractured throughout the planet and find new alliances to bring down the system. In order to successfully lead the rebellion, Darrow is responsible for bringing hope back to the cause and using everything he knows against the Society.

To achieve what he set out to do years ago, Darrow is forced to make morally gray choices and face challenges that cause him to define his own identity, rather than the one the Society forced upon him.

TheReview

Starting off with a small recap of the first two books, we are reminded of the point of the whole series. But it’s all action from there on out. No faffing around. It’s basically more of war and strategy but it’s so much better than the other two books in this series. Darrow is still working towards shattering the Color system but more openly now that he has been outed as a Red.

Alliances are shifting all over the place. I had mental whiplash from keeping everything straight and emotional whiplash from all the character surprises. The entire Society enters different stages of rebellion. Everyone seems to be shifting and evolving themselves as well.

There were so many surprises. My favorite thing about Pierce Brown is that he doesn’t tell the reader everything. It makes for quite the twists and turns (and whiplash). I was shocked to the point of throwing the book a few times. BUT NOW… to the best part…

THE WHOLE LAST 98 PAGES ARE THE BEST! Literally could not put the book down while simultaneously needing to put it down to catch my breath. These 98 pages are the best pages in the entire series. I fell in love and in hate with Pierce Brown here.

On the heels of Red Rising (of which I was not the biggest fan), Golden Son is better, but Morning Star is glorious. Absolutely get through Red Rising just for this book (and its last 98 pages). The whole series is completely and fully worth it.

*NOTE: There are three more books published that take place years after the end of the original trilogy but I only read the original three.
