Okay, so… as far as Devil’s Island goes - which is a fairly big chunk of this book - woof. There was so much happening. And I truly could not figure out who was good and bad on the island. But the characters that develop as an important part of this book from the island are for real ride-or-die. 

As for Keri’s and Zarrah’s relationship… they have it rough. And watching them try to come to terms with the past and rebuild is so deep and painful. 

Let’s talk Keris - not my ideal MC but his struggle with letting her be herself and throw herself into harm’s way is so real. Also, I’m all for burning the world down for your woman but be good at it. Make it work in your favor. Don’t be dumb. Which honestly, Keris kind of is. But we still love him. 

And the ending… OOF. It was so good. 

I’m conflicted. It was good but it was a tough book to get into. It seems like the MCs are always at odds with the world and themselves and Keris is almost never making good decisions. It’s hard to read an idiot being an idiot repeatedly.

The book really beat the whole “star-crossed lovers” thing to death. I still really liked it and the ending was amazing. It was just a very politically involved, war focused, tumultuous book.
