Going back about a year from the end of The Lies We Steal, Sage and Rook engage in a secret romance. After breaking Rook’s heart and earning his hatred, Sage’s sister dies and she is sent off to a psych ward.

Returning to the present, Sage is released from the psych ward but nothing is the same. She will have to come to terms with the consequences of her actions as well as everyone else’s.

The very beginning is boring but it sets the stage for one of the best books I have ever read.

Rook and Sage’s relationship is so entrancing to read. It’s toxic and vengeful and monstrous, especially on Rook’s end. This book is the epitome of enemies to lovers. I normally don’t even like second chance romance but this one was really well done. I find the secrets and the miscommunication and the “why” behind everything to be complex and fascinating.

Sage is so extremely damaged and Rook arguably worse so. Rook is a pyromaniac (same, bro) that loves pain and Sage is just plain cruel to literally everyone because of her own depressions and demons. What do you get when you put two emotionally damaged crazies together? A dope read, that’s what. It just WORKS for them, let me tell you. It gave me all the butterflies. Watching their relationship be so raw and damaged and crazy just got me. They brought out the best and the worst in each other because they are both just so damaged. But the healing that they brought each other was beautiful.

I had a book hangover after just act one and the book wasn’t even half over. Good gracious. I could not put this book down. Every new scene, every part, every chapter… just left me wanting more.
