TheStory

Raven Fisher has always felt like she didn’t belong. Always an outcast. Always angry at the world. When a stranger reveals a secret world of daemons, shifters, and magick is revealed to Raven, she discovers that she is one of the daemon and the key to saving the universe from an ancient evil. While navigating this new world, Raven forges alliances with a group of misfits and must learn to lean on them to help her.

After being pulled into the conflict between this mysterious evil and the daemons, Raven discovers her role in helping resolve the conflict. “Simple” is not a word she would use to describe her destiny but in order to protect the people she loves from the darkness, Raven will give it all she has.

TheReview

Well, doesn’t this book just jump right into the whirlwind of life changing events that Raven is going through. She thought she was just a regular person but finds out that she is actually a very powerful key in fighting evil. Starting right off with the changes in Raven’s life, we get to follow her journey of self discovery, controlling her magick, and working out whom she can trust.

I don’t even know what this book is classified as, but the whole thing reads like an action-packed fantasy. Besides being all about the action, the characters were really the best part of this book. Found family vibes. There isn’t a whole lot of romance. But from her interactions with everyone, you can assume it will be coming in the next books.

There were definitely fair complaints about the book from other people- the lack of romance, the slightly odd writing style, etc. Which are fair, but if you know what you are getting into, it’ll be a good read.

It’s a super fast read - only about 300 pages of easy reading. I finished it in a day. Just be prepared for lots of action and little romance. Ultimately, this one seems like it’s mostly just a set up for the next book in the series. It was decent writing and the storyline and characters were amazing. I loved it from start to finish and am so ready to start the next book in the series (since this one just seemed like a teaser into what is really coming).

P.S.A. I saw a lot of complaints in reviews about the way Conrad’s Jamaican accent was written. Totally fair. Sometimes I didn’t even know what he was trying to say so I had to say it out loud in an accent to figure it out (and even then, yikes). So, just so you know.
