The Origin’s Daughter #2

By Alexandra St. Pierre

TheStory

Raven wakes up as a prisoner in the Court of Pride, trapped by her magical debt to Amon - The Dark Prince of the Court of Pride. After suffering through torture and the death of her mother, the thought of serving Amon sends her reeling.

But bigger problems than Amon are surrounding Raven. Ash Nevra has now taken control of the Dominion and is enslaving its people. It is up to Raven and her cadre to unlock the secrets that could save the realm. But in a world full of magick, evil, and deceit, Raven must outsmart her enemies in order to save her friends and the realm at large.

TheReview

Well, well, well… Raven is now captured, has been tortured, and watched her mother die. Yikes. Talk about starting off in the thick of the pot. The found family vibes here are ultimately what save Raven from despair. Once she comes to terms with her lot, she begins training her powers, working to free The Origin, and go to war with Ash Nevra. Holy moly. That’s a lot.

Obviously, this is - once again - an action packed book. Similar to the first book, there is just conflict and war and secrets all over the place. However, St. Pierre was really able to combine the emotional aspects of the characters with the action going on, and still moved the storyline along well.

There are some gaps in the storyline, though. It’s missing the “why” behind a lot of the actions and the reasons things happened. Some ancillary information would have been nice to make it feel more well rounded. Still, given the short length of the book, it still flows and you can just fill in the missing information yourself. Assume some stuff, ya know?

As a side note, Rycon is hands-down the most hilarious character in this book. His relationship with Raven is so sweet and I love their dynamic. The other side characters are wonderful as well, but Rycon and Raven just got me. Then, obviously, there is Amon and Raven, which is like a sweet slow burn, enemies to lovers but with a twist. It’s not the classic story.

PSA! Do not be fooled. This was sold to me as a duet, which it is not! Oh, was I the only one who didn’t know that? Well, okay then. But the ending is a major cliff hanger, and I was not prepared for that. I feel slightly tricked but also stoked that there is a whole other book that I didn’t know existed.
