TheStory
The night Tissanah tries to buy her freedom, she barely escapes with her life. Tissanah goes to the Orders - the most powerful organizations of magic Wielders in order to save her best friend. In order to become a Wielder herself, she is tasked with completing an apprenticeship with Maxantarius, a grouchy Wielder that has left his glory days behind him.
With the threat of war looming on the horizon, Tissanah and Max wind up mixed up in the Orders’ business. While dealing with the crypticness of the Orders and trying to prove herself, Tissanah eventually works together with Max to fulfill her duties. But Max has a dark past that he wishes to forget and it might just be the very thing Tissanah needs for her future.
TheReview
This was a very good storyline and book overall. There isn’t a whole lot in the romance department but what we do have is a special relationship between Max and Tissanah. Like a trope mixed bag. Sort of enemies to lovers. Sort of grumpy/sunshine. Sort of slow burn. But not fully any of those. It’s entirely its own relationship. Which makes for an interesting love story because it’s not entirely predictable.
The main focus is really on Tissanah’s freedom and her goals alongside Max. The character development was really good and there are even interesting side characters. Also, we have villains, sort of villains, and people who aren’t clearly villains or not. It was a very dynamic set of characters.
There is a big twisteroo in the middle. It was not alluded to whatsoever in the synopsis, which made for a delightful surprise. In fact, read this part S.L.O.W. because it’s completely unexpected and even confusing. It took me a while to actually catch on and get interested in what was happening here.
Overall, this book was really good but it verged on mundane. And I don’t even really know why. I loved reading it but it was just missing some oomph. Common storyline and an FMC that is soooo extremely, overwhelmingly, fantastically, blah blah blah, noble. It’s still a four star read for me, so I don’t really know what was missing but something was.
P.S. Why does no one HATE Nura?! She is so atrocious. And it isn’t even debatable. The fact that the reasons for absolutely HATING her are barely even addressed is for one, highly irritating, and for two, a missed storyline.
