Scarred
Never After #2
By Emily McIntire
*Can be read as a standalone*
*A Lion King (Hamlet) fractured fairytale*
TheStory
Sara is sent to King Michael to be his bride - but really with murdery intentions. While he “courts” her (poorly), she catches the eye of his brother Tristan, the scarred prince.
While Tristan plans his rebellion to overthrow Michael, he also ends up falling for Sara and the two have to untangle their webs of lies and deceit to figure out the truth in their stories. And the truth could cause everything to fall apart.
TheReview
There’s not a whole lot of background information on the characters or their intentions other than the basics. But, Sara really just seems to risk everything she’s “worked her whole life for” right out the gate. Like immediately. But it’s a short book (by my standards) so I get the need for expediency to get to the good stuff.
Tristan and Sara’s chemistry was REALLY good sometimes but other times it did feel weird and kind of silly.
On that note, Tristan is truly horrifying as a character sometimes. And I don’t really get why people want to follow him and make him king but okay I guess. I mean he did have to resemble Scar and Scar was basically a terrifying dictator so that tracks. But Tristan does actually want the best for the people.
The ending was pretty cute. Dark but there is some light there. I love the side characters that make it to the end. It gives pretty decent Lion King vibes but not nearly as good as Hooked was. I liked it but didn’t love it.
