In the Likely Event
By Rebecca Yarros
TheStory
After a plane crash brings them together, Nate and Izzy steal chance moments together over the years. After settling into a life of politics she never wanted, Izzy finds herself in Afghanistan where she comes under the protection of a special operations sergeant named Phelan… or Nate.
He wants her safe. She wants to help with the war efforts. And they have a history of screwing up their relationship that neither of them have faced in the last three years.
TheReview
I feel the need to tell you, because I always want to know this in advance, that this book flashes between the present and the last 10 years of Nate and Izzy’s relationship.
That was a decently sized deterrent for me. It just didn’t flow like a story for me in a natural way. But that’s my own personal preference.
That being said, it was a good story. I haven’t had a book quite like this.
I liked Izzy going to help, Nate wanting to protect her, and both of them being super pissy at each other for how things ended three years ago.
The entire present timeline takes place in Afghanistan and almost every other chapter flashes back to the past, which continually gives context to the present.
It wasn’t as funny as some of Yarros’ other military romances have been nor was it nearly as gut wrenching. It was a simple book and was good to pass the time. Besides the flashback portion, which just isn’t my jam, I enjoyed it. By no means does it hit my top favorites of Yarros’ books but I find myself fairly invested in the story.
