War
The Four Horsemen #2
By Laura Thalassa
*Can be read as a standalone*
TheStory
War comes to earth as the Second Horseman of the Apocalypse. During a war raid, he lays eyes on Miriam and claims her as his wife sent to him by God. When she refuses to surrender to him as his wife, the two engage in a volatile back-and-forth, neither willing to give up their beliefs or their cause.
TheReview
The majority of this book is Mirian not being okay with War murdering everyone in sight (rightfully so). So she spends a lot of her time trying to thwart his battles. Which mainly serves to show the reader the difficulty of their relationship. How can Miriam build a relationship with a mass murderer?
Very angsty and inner turmoil-y. Maybe a bit too much.
While Miriam begs and pleads with War and fights against him, she never really addresses to him how heartbreaking his heinous deeds are to her. She fights and fights but throughout the book, she slowly gives in to him without ever really telling him why she’s so pissed. And he has his purpose, so he doesn’t understand her feelings.
I just kept saying, “TELL HIM HOW YOU FEEL, WOMAN!” I want a knock-down, drag-out fight followed by a beautiful makeup story. Is that too much to ask? Very frustrating.
Of course, he changes in the end (not a spoiler, because obviously) but it was immediate… like BOOM!… and now he’s a lover not a fighter. I would have liked to see more gradual change but hey, love can be a sudden light switch flipped on that changes everything, I guess.
It was a good second book. I enjoyed reading it and there were parts I couldn’t put it down. It was way longer than Pestilence so it gave me time to sink into the world for a while.
