To help with the family bar, February moves back to the ‘Burg. When a murderer goes on a killing rampage in her name, she has to move in with Colt, a cop with whom she has a complicated past. That past comes back to haunt them and they have to deal with it in order to move forward.

First and foremost, this book is BIG. It felt like it would be a quick little romance to read but it’s drawn out in the best way. Kristen Ashley took her time to get through this story. It might be a little bit longer than it needed to be by about 75 or so pages, but it totally sucked me in.

Second, Ashley’s prose is funky. It feels very conversational, sometimes too much. The sentences were off-kilter in a way that sometimes I had to re-read them. I had heard this about her writing before I started reading, so I knew what to expect. It didn’t bother me but it is worth noting.

She uses small town euphemisms and niche lingo that can be difficult to understand, especially if you aren’t from or don’t understand small towns. Personally, I thought the writing worked for the type of story it was and it’s worth it for the cute story.

As for the actual storyline - cute! A little bit childhood best friends/lovers. A little bit forced proximity. A little bit of murder. Etc. I’m not normally a fan of the tropes in this book but I thought it was really well plotted out.

Colt and February didn’t rely on their past connection to justify their current relationship development. They really earned their new connection without relying on nostalgia.

P.S. Colt is secretly a cinnamon roll and I am here for it.

The side characters throughout the book seriously added to the storyline for me. It gave a bit of found family just in that everyone came together to help, love on, and solidify the main relationship of Colt and Feb.

Overall, it was a good read. Family. Friendships. Small town romance. And a little serial killer just to spice things up.
