By Kristen Ashley
~ Can be read as a standalone ~
TheStory
Widowed mother of two, Violet, winds up in a no-strings-attached “relationship” with her gruff and sexy neighbor, Cal. When her husband’s murderer finds out where she’s moved to and starts harassing her, Cal, alongside the other men of the ‘Burg, takes it upon himself to protect her and her two children. And there is absolutely no way that Cal will ever develop feelings for this woman or her girls…
TheReview
Ah! I’m in love. I thought For You was good. But this one?! Swoon
Cal is a big, burly, grumpy, hot man that is the definition of emotionally constipated.
Violet is a bad ass, kiss ass mother who is emotionally mature and handles her crap.
Watching Cal avoid his emotions was the freaking highlight of this book. It was hilarious and ridiculous. It made me laugh and simultaneously want to kick him in the shin.
I was a little surprised that Violet didn’t have more feelings about her dead husband given that he only died a year and a half ago and his murderer is stalking her. It didn’t bother me, I just tend to see more fee fees from widows in books.
However, Violet is more of a pick-yourself-up-by-the-boot-straps, deal with your emotions, and do the best you can kind of woman. So it worked for her. And she has kids, so she didn’t really get to wallow in grief and self-deprication.
These two were full of so much DRAMA! I loved it. Violet is just a woman doing the best she can (and doing it well, I might add). Cal is a manly-man that refuses to acknowledge his feelings. And Violet didn’t complain about it. Cal fits right into the girls’ lives, he just won’t admit it.
Oh, and Cal’s emotional backstory?! Oof. That got me. Poor alpha male all tortured by legitimately disgusting events from his past. Yet, somehow still managing to give a crap about Violet and her family and their tragic past.
While Cal and Violet (and the girls) were truly the heart and soul of this story, the side characters were also super dope. Even the dead characters added so much to the story.
This book was so freaking good. I will never forget it. Okay, maybe not never, but it will stay with me for a while. They earned their love and made me fall in love with them in return. A fantastic ROI for the time it took me to read it.
