The Romantic Pact
Kings of Football #2
By Meghan Quinn
TheStory
During their childhood as best friends, Crew and Hazel made a pact to never be romantic with each other in order to maintain their friendship. After a misunderstanding involving a kiss, the two don’t speak for years.
Following the death of Crew’s grandfather, Hazel and he are sent on a trip to Germany. Forced into close proximity, the two reconnect and are forced to navigate their feelings and the awkwardness of it all.
But their life paths don’t necessarily allow for a trip… and definitely not a romantic relationship. His pro-career as a football player is on the line after a bad season. Hazel intends to stay on the family farm. And now they/re on this trip, orchestrated by his grandfather, trying to maneuver through their feelings for each other.
Although, perhaps that was the grandfather’s plan. Their friendship is reignited, including all the banter and chemistry. But the lines between friendship and romance quickly blur. Now, they have to confront their past and decide what is more important - their dreams or their feelings.
TheReview
The beginning of this one starts out really slow. It doesn’t have a lot of interesting bits happening and it couldn’t really keep my attention. So, it was a little difficult to get into. I liked the first one in this series so it was a bummer this one wasn’t as good. But each book is written by a different author, so that could have had something to do with it.
Surprisingly, I wasn’t a huge fan of Hazel as a character. Actually, both her and Crew seemed inauthentic to me. I didn’t buy their chemistry. They lacked depth. And, honestly, I wasn’t even expecting much from either of them, given the classic, simple storyline that this was. Which means I wouldn’t have been hard to please.
Both the storyline and the characters seemed to be very forced. It seemed like the author didn’t even know if these two should be together but needed to write a book? It just didn’t resonate for me.
