TheStory
The Spy placed himself at Kingmakers under his assumed identity all so he could preemptively infiltrate the school while he waited for her to arrive. Her father has captured and imprisoned his father for years. Now he will make the man pay for his crimes by taking the only thing he values - his daughter.
But when the object of his revenge arrives at Kingmakers, his plans fall apart. In befriending her, The Spy has accidentally gone and fallen for her. When the time comes for revenge, he must decide if his revenge is worth giving up the only woman he has ever loved.
TheReview
The Spyyyyyyy!
No identity spoilers. Part of the fun of this series was figuring out who The Spy was going to be in this book. Sophie Lark left little clues throughout the book. Now, I had two guesses but the one I was pretty sure of was, in fact, wrong. My second option - correct. Yay me!
Now, onto the good stuff.
As soon as Nix entered Kingmakers, I completely fell in love with her and Sabrina (who inspired a fifth and unplanned book in the Kingmakers series). Nix was so hated by everyone because of her stupid father. Sadly, she didn’t even understand why. Her father had always been amazing to her but to the rest of the world, he was atrocious.
Sabrina was essentially her only friend, even though our MCs from other books were also nice to her. She took it all in stride, like the badass she was. She was strong and talented and smart. Brutally honest. Wild. I just loved her.
Since The Spy essentially planned his entire existence at Kingmakers around trapping Nix, the whole book is filled with intrigue and mystery. Basically you know there is a feud, but you also know that the stories some people are telling are not necessarily the whole truth. In every story, there are three sides - yours, theirs, and the real one. This story has that exact air about it. As the reader, you can tell that there is more to the storyline than meets the eye.
The Spy was conflicted and confused once Nix arrived at the school, but he has a job to do, a father to rescue. He was unerringly loyal to his family so Nix sort of throws a wrench in that. He’s guarded and trying his best to stay on mission, but it’s not really working for him.
Throughout the book, there were flashbacks to the past essentially leading to the reasoning why The Spy was at Kingmakers. Once the past and present collide, the whole story comes together. And it was a SHOCKER of a collision.
This was such a good book - especially the last quarter of it. The ending was deeply, deeply satisfying. At the very end, we also get to see where all the characters from the previous books are now. It also sets up interestingly for Sabrina’s book. You could definitely tell that Lark was not planning to continue the series so I was very interested in seeing how she went on to Sabrina’s story from the ending of this one.
