Back to the start of book one, the story now follows Juniper, who is tricked by the Hadleigh’s to become the first sacrifice to their God. After escaping and going on the run for years, she and Zane make a deal. Juniper agrees to sell her soul to Zane in return for his help in getting revenge on the Hadleigh’s and their Libiri.

It was crazy following the same timeline but from Juniper and Zane’s perspective. A few scenes overlap from book one, but mostly it focuses on what Zane and Juniper go through in their own story.
Juniper is such a little hellcat. She’s fierce and refuses to be helpless or to admit to needing anyone. She’s been defending herself for years and hasn’t relied on any other person. So Zane coming into the picture and insisting that she rely on him when she needs, raises her hackles. I love her.
Zane has such a wonderfully dickish attitude. Their banter is off the charts. Zane is sassy and he loves Juniper’s fire and her fierceness. He might be my favorite thing about the book, but I also like Juniper and her character development. She is perfect for him. I love their relationship.
There aren’t a lot of side characters in this one. There is a few, briefly mentioned, characters that helped round out the characters and the storyline. I could have gone for some more central characters, but given Juniper’s inability to trust anyone (hardly even Zane), it made sense that she wouldn’t have invited or accepted many people into her journey of revenge.
The events in this book were fascinating to read. I don’t know how to describe it. Every event came one right after the other in a perfect flow. I never once had a moment where I wasn’t entirely engrossed in the storyline and the MCs. Everything was beautifully balanced and well-blended.
This story is so wholly its own, I forgot that it technically happened at the same time as book two (maybe a smidgen beforehand). It wasn’t until the connection scenes that I even remembered the timeline of events were the same. So beautifully executed.
The ending of this book occurs when the ending of book one also happened, or very close to it. Basically, the two books so far tell the story of two different couples handling their own business during the same timeframe.
Personally, I loved this book immensely but I still thought book one was just a teeny bit better.
P.S. There is a moderately graphic torture scene, but it is SO deserved that it didn’t bother me in the slightest.
