TheStory
Beginning back at the time of Marcus’ murder, Everly’s magic teleports her to her family home in the woods when she panics. Upon entering the house of her coven, Everly finds Callum, an archdemon who has been in the house for decades while waiting for Everly to arrive.
Thousands of years ago, Callum had a premonition of Everly and has been searching for her ever since. In his premonition, Everly asked for his help. While Everly has many areas in her life that would require assistance, her goal now is to kill the God terrorizing the town and rid the world of It forever.
As a demon devoted to Everly, Callum will help her, be subservient to her, protect her, and do anything else Everly requires of him.
TheReview
The story really begins when Everly finds Callum. Who, by the way, is an utter psycho during their first meeting. Hilarious. The way they met is a little odd but poor Callum has been waiting 2,000 YEARS for her. He’s bound to be a little pent up and on edge.
Everly is very quiet and submissive while also trying to overcome her self-doubt due to her upbringing. Part of the allure and the challenge for Callum is that innocence. Callum allows her the space to be in control, find herself, and claim her confidence. Unlike the other two demons in this book, Callum was immediately ready to love and protect Everly at all costs. Definitely not an enemies-to-lovers. More like “I’ve waited thousands of years for you and now you’re mine - whatever the cost.” Immediate devotion.
I’m not really into a dominant woman/submissive man, but Callum allows Everly to be the dominant one (usually) because it’s what she needs to grow and thrive. Also the fact that he could take the power back in their dynamic whenever he wishes (and occasionally does), I vibed with it.
Apart from the character and power dynamics, the book is essentially a lot of spiciness and a lot of learning magic. Almost the entire book occurs in the house where Everly is learning to master her magical abilities and getting freaky (really freaky) with Callum. Of course, there were other scenes and tidbits of other developmental points in the storyline, but that’s the gist.
Ultimately, the story is about Everly’s growth and how Callum was the person she needed in order to come into her power, confidence, and self-reliance. It was a beautiful story of self-realization that was quite a shift from the other books in the series.
