TheStory
Juliette has taken over as Supreme Commander but the hard part is just beginning. The other supremes are ignoring her rise to the top and Juliette still must navigate ruling a continent with next to zero know how. When movements start being made in the world, Juliette, alongside her friends and allies, may not be out from under the Reestablishment after all.
TheReview
Juliette’s confidence took on a major shift in this book. She grew so much in the last three books but in this one she was wholly doubtful of herself. Honestly, everyone shifted a lot in this book. Castle was being super cagey. Warner has some SERIOUS explaining to do with his unwillingness to prepare Juliette for anything she had to face as well as the keeping of his own secrets.
I know Warner is supposed to be Mr. Secret Broody Pants, but come on!
He’s not helpful at all. He knows things that Juliette NEEDS to know or she will fail in everything she does and every interaction she has. He’s too secretive and closed off for his own good. He was unwilling and unable to share with Juliette on top of dealing with his own struggles from book three.
We get both Juliette and Warner’s perspectives in this book (although Warner’s perspective did not endear me to his lack of action in helping Juliette run an ENTIRE FREAKING CONTINENT AT SEVENTEEN YEARS OLD!).
There wasn’t a whole lot of action. The focus is more on self-doubt, politics, internal debating, secrets, and struggling with the wars being waged inside one’s own mind.
About halfway through, everything started building up to a crescendo you just knew was about to come. It was building and building and building and I was just waiting for it to come to a head or collapse around all of my beloved characters.
I could feel it in my bones that the ending would be a dumpster fire. The fact that it absolutely was is strictly my own personal opinion but this book is the first one in the series that I felt ended on an absolutely heart-stopping cliff hanger. But UGH! It’s so good.
I need the next book immediately.
